Program Description
When Doves Code is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that is working to put more qualified, confident computer science educators in K-12 classrooms. We are currently looking for Volunteer Teachers for our July/Aug 2020 virtual summer camps.
The goal of our program is to help cultivate the students’ exposure and interest in computer science and engineering with beginner-level topics. We need your help to expose more students (especially minority students) to coding and robotics!
We hope you’ll join us and spread the word to your colleagues in the teaching or computer science professions.
Job Description
We are hiring instructors for a Coding & Robotics Virtual Summer Camp teaching position.
This is a VOLUNTEER position, but we are offering a modest “Thank You” stipend to all instructors (Up to $600 for our July 13th – Aug 6th camp).
No prior computer science or robotics know-how is required, but familiarity with either or both subjects is definitely a plus! We will provide some professional development. We need you to be a quick learner and ready to lead short 1- or 2-hour sessions with middle and high school students for 4 weeks (2-3 days/week).
Responsibilities
- Present lessons in a comprehensive manner and use visual/audio means to facilitate learning
- Assess and record students’ progress and provide feedback
- Collaborate with other teachers, teaching assistants, and other teammates in an online social setting (e.g. Facebook Group)
- Develop and enrich professional skills and knowledge by participating in formal and informal professional development opportunities that may be provided by the organization
- OPTIONAL: Assist with customizing course curriculum, materials, and assessments
About The Curriculum

Required Skills
- Be passionate for the duty of helping more minority students get exposed to computer science and engineering subjects
- Be familiar with teaching using a block-based programming language/tool that is very similar to Scratch
- Know how to organize a class and deliver lessons in a virtual setting using tools like Zoom and Google Docs/Slides (a TA can be provided if needed to assist with tech logistics)
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Well-organized and committed
- Creative and energetic
- Strong moral values and discipline
Other Preferred Skills
- Degree in teaching or in a specialized (related) subject with a certificate in education
- Proven experience as a teacher or computer science professional with group instruction experience
- Some knowledge of teaching best practices
